Doodle Week: Sinister

Doodle Week Day 5 gets a bit philosophical with the theme Doodle Evil. I'm not a subscriber to the black-and-white world view that sees clear external divisions between the holy and profane. Rather I perceive myriad contradictions in humanity's perpetual internal struggle to determine whether our worse or better nature wins out. When an evil act is committed, it's usually by the hand of someone who has given in to his or her baser, most selfish instincts.

Is this also a left hand? Have you taken inspiration from the Latin word sinister?

This is superb! It can be interpreted two ways - Hands of God or Hands of the evil one.

The drawing is almost alive, ready to touch.

You did it again Francis, congrats.

@JH&MM Cats are very perceptive creatures, so don't sell yourself short :).

@Claire Exactly! I was wondering whether someone would catch the play on words :).

@rkdsign88 Thanks for the visit and comment. I'm still figuring some things out, but the more I draw the better I get.

@Jena I'm actually quite fond of drawing hands for some reason. This drawing came very easily to me.

Ah, you've doodled an avatar for Philosophy 101!

Obviously this doodle week is mere child's play for you while I on the other hand struggle to squiggle out anything someone may actually recognize!

Have you ever thought of doing book illustrations? Your artwork is very good, and definitely unique. -- The post was thoughtful too :)

I feel like a stalking fan, but you ought to put out a book of your sketches, dude. I would buy it!

@Shearyadi Be careful, it may be a hand to pull you down with the rest of us in the evil blogosphere :).

@WT4W I think your last doodled cat was quite good. I'm glad you like my doodles, but I work pretty hard at them ... probably too hard :).

@Justin Thanks! I'd love to do illustrations. In fact, I'm supposed to be working on some for a blogging friend's self-published poetry book right now.

@Kelly I've got two sketch books currently being filled. Maybe I should reproduce them and put the copies up for sale :).

Or, don't you think that there are simply some who do not think? They just act, and not from instinct. Not from selfishness. They seem not to have the ability to think. It's more unsettling to me than what your image portrays, even though, as always, your image is beautiful.

Hi Kelly

I believe true evil requires some level of calculation, but I don't know if that's what you mean by "thinking." I agree some people don't consider the consequences of their actions. There are also those who know the consequences and act anyway.

My purpose with the drawing was two-fold: 1. a pun on the word sinister 2. the idea that evil is something that can only be created with the human hand (and mind).

This would make a great discussion over a glass (or three) of wine :).
