Doodle Week: Self Portrait

Doodle Week has officially begun, and here is my initial contribution in keeping with the first day's theme of "doodle you." It's not a very accurate or flattering self-portrait, but I'm still fond of it.

A propos' of doodle:

in italiano significa scarabocchio,ghirigori,
cock-a-doodle-chicchirichi,
un bel scioglilingua!
;)

That would make a good tribal mask.

Not accurate? What are you talking about?! It's a spit of your facebook photo. Excellent!

I think it's my favorite of all of the artwork I've seen of yours! Just curious - what medium do you work in? Colored pencil? Do you scan or photograph your pieces? I'm a technophile so this stuff interests me :)

It's only everything a doodle should be, that's all! Charming, great, preposterous, dark and flippant.

I love this! I think its great that everyone has done something totally different and it has captured your facebook profile rather well.

I would also like to know the answers to Jason's aka GorillaSushi's questions :)

I would say, it is a great work of art. Mysterious and it speaks a thousand words.

@hanna I never knew what doodle was in Italian. Thanks for expanding my vocaulary. I hope you'll share one of your own doodles. I'd read somewhere that doodle was an insult, I had made the connection to the song Yankee Doodle.

@mark A lot of my faces end up looking like masks. I think there's probably some psychological profile to be built from that :).

@sand I'm not sure whether to take that as a compliment or not ... maybe I need a new facebook pic :)

@jason I do use color pencils on sketch pad. What I've gotten into the habit of doing is taking a digital image, clean it up a bit, and then post it. It's not the optimal way to show them online, but it's simplest for me.

@dave Thanks so much ... I like all those adjectives quite a lot :)

@claire I'm glad you like it, and this really is a lot of fun. We should have Doodle Week more often. Thanks so much to you and Laura for organizing it. Regarding the questions, please see above :).

@jenna Flattery will get you everywhere, as the saying goes :).

Great doodle. We love it. It reminds us very much of the artwork we read about in various anthropology classes.

Francis Scudellari said...

Thanks Moki. Maybe I'll doodle something more cat-like when we get to "doodle animal" day.

Finals week is over for me now, thanks for the luck and such. :) Hope your week is going great. I think that I might join in doodle week...

Thanks Elise,
Congrats on finishing exams! You should definitely join in the fun. I'd love to see your drawings. I've got two more I'll be posting later this evening.

This is exactly what you looked like after we drank that mushroom tea.

Francis Scudellari said...

Tom, not to mention that time with the peyote. Although that was more of a melting experience.

It captures the spirit of your face. I rather like that it is an outline or a shadow of a face.

Francis Scudellari said...

@book_calendar I prefers abstractions of faces, rather than full sketches. I think that's because I can't draw them accurately enough :).
