this came to my mind first... then i felt this beautiful work has got something more... i looked up the word brittle and found out it's got another layer of meaning: lacking warmth of feeling; cold
is this applicable here? did you have it in mind too?
(it's just a personal curiosity... i know the writer is dead when the reader is communicating with the work) :D
I think there were a couple levels of meaning intended with this. First that he feels his words can't match the strength of his feelings, but also that the vows (made of those words) will inevitable crack and break.
